Known Issues & Limitations - macOS
- Handling of errors when associated apps are not installed
If a user attempts to open an encrypted file via double-click on the file icon and the default app associated with the file type is not installed (for example, a .pub file when Microsoft Publisher is not installed), the system will throw an error. Users can open the file with an alternative, supported app via the "Open with" option in the context menu.
- Possible versioning when files are added to rule-based locations in cloud storage
In some instances, the first version of a file may be uploaded in its decrypted state when added to a cloud storage locations (such as OneDrive, Dropbox, Google Drive etc) governed by an encryption rule. If this happens, it will be quickly followed by a subsequent version that has been encrypted by the rule as expected.
- Unable to open files directly from within an open application
Problem: If an application such as Microsoft Word is already open, it is not possible to browse to and open encrypted files using the native "File >> Open" functionality within the app.
Workaround: Browse for files using Mac Finder and open using double-click or "Open with" from the context menu.
- Encrypted files residing outside locations without encryption rules are not recognised
Problem: When interacting with encrypted files residing outside a location governed by encryption rules, the system will not actually recognise the files and they will need to be accessed in a different way to view their contents
Workaround: Ensure the "finder extensions" option is checked via Settings >> Extensions" and then "register" these files with the associated app. They can then be opened by choosing the associated app under the SmartEncryption icon from the context menu.
